A commitment to a relationship by investing money, time and energy can be a measure of engagement to that relationship. Horses provide women with an opportunity to engage in a growth fostering relationship and the women make sacrifices to share their lives with horses, they have given up so much, materially and have had their lives changed for the better.

Does your partner support you in these endeavours?

Whoopi Goldberg
When successful bought a horse property and amassed four horses. Since has left but so misses her horse she wants to return to a lifestyle with horses – a lifestyle that ‘has given her so much happiness in the past’ (Goldberg, cited in Rappaport & Wilkinson, 2004, p. 31).

Melissa Gilbert (and partner Bruce Boxleitner) in ‘The ties that bind’
Courting on horseback
Cowboy lifestyle – Hidden Hills, Los Angeles
(Rappaport & Wilkinson, 2004, p. 28).

My future plans.
I am studying to be a classical riding instructor. Unfortunately my situation at present does not allow for me to have any horses but, I am definitely working towards buying a property so that when I do buy horses they are with me for the rest of their lives. To stay motivated I am having riding lessons twice a week, where I am learning to teach and ride to the best of my ability (SA, Australia).

I had a pony for a short time [as a child] but then had not time or finances to spend on my passion. After marriage and raising children I following my passion and became an equine massage therapist. From that work I became interested in equine biomechanics and learned of the damage we do to our horses through traditional shoeing with steel horse shoes and it began a huge learning journey for me.  Firstly, educating others and now I am part of a group who have developed a Diploma course in Equine Podiotherapy (specalist rehabilitative hoof care using natural hoof care methods) (NSW, Australia).

My story in relation to horses would have to be around the idea that there have not been any decisions that I have made in life in which the horses have been central to my decision making process, where to work, where to live and how well I can accomodate the horses into the mix. I have worked in regional centres because it was easier to have horses in a place where agistment was reasonably available and within close proximity to home/work. When I moved into a capital city it was on the basis that I had a plan of where I would keep my horses and then I purchased an apartment in close proximity to work to ensure that I reduced my travel time to as little as possible from work to home so that I could accomodate travelling out to where my horses are on a regular basis after work. I travel a 2 hour return trip to ride after work but refuse to travel this distance from home/work/home (Vic, Aust.).

Your story resonates with me - each time we (husband and I) have moved - we take into account land/area for horses - in NZ he had to travel 1hr 15 min to work and then back each day (Ruth).
