Connection to Nature

Page history last edited by ruth billany 14 years, 11 months ago

Sharing our lives with horses enables us to a direct connection with nature embodied in an animal. Horses allow us to experience the Earth’s biological rhythms, the cycles of life.

Horses provide a women with a multisensory experience that focuses outside the self. The mere presence of horses having been in a urban landscape can remind horsewomen of a possibility beyond concrete and tarmac, and make a connection to a beautiful animal, part of the wider world, part of nature. This socio-sensory awareness when working with horses requires a great deal of body to body contact and allows a constant stream of information from all the senses, perhaps reactivating our emotional and intuitive mind. So it seems horses may open women to feelings that are indescribable but nevertheless empowering at a non-cognitive level.

Kinship with the land National Cowgirl Hall of Fame (US) reflects the cowgirl’s love of the wide open spaces

‘Riding is such an adventure to me, especially when you and your horse are on the move and the wind is blowing in through your hair. The air is fresh and the scenery is so beautiful and your mind is wandering freely, and suddenly you are hit with the realization of how wonderful life is. When I am on Sandrino, riding up into the mountains, my problems seem like a million miles away’ (Bundchen, cited in Rappaport & Wilkinson, 2004, p. 5).

Beauty of horses

Watching ‘The Lord of the rings: The two towers’ she started to cry when she ‘saw Gandalf riding that white horse. For some reason that majestic animal ripped my heart out’ (Gilbert, as cited in Rappaport & Wilkinson, 2004, p. 28).

To horse

I have always had a rather unique bond with animals, and often still day dream about the farm and my childhood. When I was young I had the dream of becoming a riding instructor/ famous horse rider, one of those women that girls look up to and emulate themselves on (like I did my instructors when I was a child)- I guess that dream still exists for me. I tried to take a very different path (going to uni, working overseas etc) but it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I really admitted to myself that my passion lies with horses. What a moment that was, the moment of truth and clarity (SA, Australia).
